BEIJING -- The Fourth World Conference on Women, the largest United Nations-sponsored gathering ever, opened yesterday with a lavish Chinese pageant and a stirring challenge by Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan to Islamic fundamentalists, the Clinton administration and the Chinese hosts.

Hillary Rodham Clinton made her first public appearance at the conference early today, criticizing government-coerced sterilizations and abortions. She did not mention China or any other country by name.
